Best Online Colleges
April 8th, 2008Online education, also known as distance education, is definitely one of the fastest-growing means of acquiring a degree these days, and as such, more and more online colleges have been cropping up to satisfy the demands of the multitude of students who, while intelligent, are unfortunately unable to find colleges that would suit their locations and their schedules. After all, more and more people nowadays have to keep jobs, or are otherwise incapacitated by circumstance, and thus the convenience of online education, brought on by the recent growth and advances of internet technology, have truly become a blessing. All that is left to do now is to figure out what the best online colleges are, especially for the particular type of degree that you are going for.
There are many factors that determine whether or not a particular college could be counted as part of the list of the best online colleges. To be sure, the best online colleges must first and foremost be accredited by the Distance Education Training Council. Unless the degrees offered by the specific online college you are considering are seen as respectable by not only established and legitimate higher learning establishments, but also by potential employers, they cannot be considered as one of the best online colleges.
In the United States of America, the Department of Education has commissioned the College Navigator, which is essentially a list of higher education opportunities for the benefit of students seeking to learn more about their options. Again, unless the online college is listed as part of the College Navigator, it cannot even be truly considered as potentially one of the best online colleges. The reason for this is that any online college not listed on the College Navigator cannot be accurately ranked – the College Navigator provides a third-party metrics, which shows the performance of the online colleges, especially by degree.
It also must be taken into account that for an online college to qualify as one of the best online colleges, it must offer two or more undergraduate degree-granting programs online. While specialty colleges are indeed all well and good, and are certainly more effective in terms of educating the students due to the focused curriculum, the true test of the best online colleges would be to find a balance between specializations and the like. This is not to say that the online colleges that are superior to others in only one degree are excluded here. It only means that like many other colleges, they leave open doors for other opportunities while maintaining excellence in one field.
Finally, should the online college be campus-based, it must have at least fifty percent of its undergraduate degree-granting programs offered online, otherwise, it cannot be truly considered one of the best online colleges – because it will not technically be an online college.
Given those, you can determine the best online colleges that you should consider.
